To look back is to cast one’s mind to the past (Collins English Dictionary).
How important is looking back? “We so often want to charge ahead into “what’s next” without taking the time to consider all that it has taken to get us here. Who were we being that allowed us to create the successes and lessons? What did we do that gave us all we have? If we don’t take the time to acknowledge this, we miss out on honoring ourselves and our actions…and feel like we are always pushing ahead toward an elusive finish line that never shows itself” (Judah Kurtz).
Some say “Never look back if you want to move forward” or “Never look back if you don’t want to be hold back” or “don’t look back unless it’s a good view”.
Looking back is not that bad. To look back is to think about what happened in the past, who you were / who you used to be, where you came from, how much you have learnt, succeeded and failed in life (at work, in school, in a competition, in a relationship, marriage, family, love etc.) because in life, we win some and lose some, we can’t permanently win or lose on everything.
To look back helps you remember and realise how far you have come to where you are now and how much you have sacrificed to be here. It helps you re-examine yourself, compliment the good you have done, reconcile who you where with who you are now and maybe have some closure. I don’t think that running away from your past is going to help you move forward successfully. You will always be tied down to it no matter how much you try to rise or forget until you reconcile with your past.
However, to look back isn’t to cling unto the past- that’s why its termed “Look” and not “Hold-on back or Glue back”. Don’t look back for a long time for its no more “Looking back”, its “Holding on” to the past and it is the worst thing that can happen to anyone. Will it tie you down, you asked?.. No it wouldn’t only tie you down, it will destroy your better future and make you achieve very less of what you intended.
I know how hard it can be to have a past that you don’t want to remember or think about because I had a hard time resolving mine but its best if you can get some closure on your past and its time to have a better tomorrow.
I know you can do it because you have the courage to accept it.
“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear” (Ambrose Redmoon).
Every little effort you have made or will make towards looking back, will worth it.
“What may look like a small act of courage is courage nevertheless. The important thing is to be willing to take a step forward” (Daisaku Ikeda).
